Dunstable is one of the oldest towns along the New Hampshire line. Settlers arrived in 1656, the town was incorporated in 1673, and it took its name from Dunstable in England. The original township was much bigger: when the colonial boundary was settled in the 1740s, its northern part ended up in New Hampshire. What remains on the Massachusetts side is a quiet town of about 3,400 people that has kept a rural character, with working farms and a good deal of protected open space.
Country homes and what they need
Dunstable homes are spread out along country roads rather than packed onto city blocks, and the mix runs from older farmhouses to newer single-family houses. Life in a rural town shows up indoors. Boots bring mud in from the yard, dogs track in leaves, and wood stoves or fireplaces leave fine dust on shelves. Older houses add wide trim and built-ins that need patient work.
Samira asks about those things before she quotes. A busy family house near the center needs a different plan than a quiet antique home on the edge of town, and the visit should fit the house you actually live in.
Getting around Dunstable
Main Street, which carries Route 113, is the town’s spine. Along it you find the 1909 town hall, the Town Common, the Dunstable Free Library and, near the Tyngsborough line, the Little Red Schoolhouse. Salmon Brook starts at the outlet of Lower Massapoag Pond near the center and winds north into Nashua, New Hampshire, through protected land the town has worked to conserve. Blanchard Hill, once a small ski area, is now conservation land too.
The town borders Tyngsborough to the east, Groton to the south, Pepperell to the west, and Nashua and Hollis, New Hampshire, to the north. From Lowell, Samira reaches Dunstable through Tyngsborough, with Route 3 running just to the east.
