Westford started out as the western part of Chelmsford and became its own town in 1729. For a long time it was known for granite, apples and worsted yarn. After the Civil War it became a place where people who worked in Lowell’s factories chose to live, one of the region’s early suburbs. Later, technology companies grew along Route 110, and I-495 now runs right through town. The Westford Museum, housed in the old Westford Academy building, and the J.V. Fletcher Library help give the center its historic feel.
Westford’s housing has layers. In Forge Village and Graniteville, the Abbot Worsted Company built homes for its mill workers in the late 1800s, and both villages are now historic districts on the National Register. Older homes like these tend to hold dust in their trim and woodwork. Forge Pond’s shoreline is lined with houses, and Nabnasset Pond has homes close by too. Elsewhere, single-family neighborhoods fill much of the town.
