Tewksbury split off from Billerica in 1734, and for generations it was a town of farms and small crossroads. Today it is a busy suburb wedged between two interstates, with I-93 and I-495 both passing through. The Merrimack River traces part of its northern edge across from Dracut, and the Shawsheen River crosses the southern end. Tewksbury Hospital, a large state campus that began as an almshouse in the mid-1800s, still covers hundreds of acres near the center of town.
Most of Tewksbury is single-family homes on quiet side streets, and new construction in town has mostly followed that pattern. You also find condominiums, including the homes built on the site of the old Tew-Mac airport, plus a mix of apartments. Around Silver Lake, the village that straddles the Wilmington line, the area began as a nineteenth-century summer colony for families who wanted a place near the lake.
