Andover has deep roots. Colonists settled here in the 1640s, and the town was incorporated in 1646. In 1855 the north parish split off to become North Andover. Phillips Academy and its Addison Gallery of American Art sit close to the town center, and the town still keeps houses from its earliest days, like the Chandler-Bigsby-Abbot House from 1673. The Merrimack touches the town’s northern edge, the Shawsheen River winds through town, and Harold Parker State Forest spreads across woods on the town’s edge.
From village houses to wooded lots
Andover’s homes tell its story. Shawsheen Village, in the north part of town, was built between 1918 and 1924 by William Wood of the American Woolen Company. Its Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival houses vary from door to door, and the streets are named after British castles and cathedrals. Ballardvale grew around a mill on the Shawsheen in the 1840s, and many of its Greek Revival and Federal style houses date from those years. Around the center you find antique homes, and in the rest of town larger houses sit on wooded lots and quiet roads.
That mix calls for flexibility. An old house wants gentle handling of floors, trim and original details. A newer, larger home has more bathrooms, bigger kitchens and open rooms where dust and fingerprints add up fast. Samira talks with you about the house before she starts, so she can plan the time it really needs.
