Lawrence was planned as a mill city. In the 1840s a group of industrialists formed the Essex Company, built the Great Stone Dam across the Merrimack and laid out canals and mills along its banks. The town was incorporated in 1847 and named for Abbott Lawrence. Workers came from many countries to run the looms, and in 1912 the city was the center of the famous textile strike now known as Bread and Roses. Families from around the world have made Lawrence home ever since, and the city still holds the Everett Mill, the Wood Mill and the old canal district as reminders of where it started.
Triple-deckers, mill lofts and family homes
Much of Lawrence was built for the people who worked in those mills, and the housing shows it. The Arlington neighborhood, in the north of the city, has whole blocks of triple-deckers and other multi-unit houses built for Arlington Mills workers. Other parts of the city have rowhouses, two-families and single-family homes on hillside streets. Along the river, several old mill and church buildings now hold apartments.
Every one of these has its own needs. A triple-decker unit often has long, narrow rooms, back porches and steep stairs that collect dirt from every trip outside. A mill loft has tall windows and open spaces where dust settles high and low. A single-family house in South Lawrence might mostly need a calm, steady routine. Where Samira works in Lawrence
The Merrimack runs right through Lawrence, with the Spicket River flowing in from Methuen to the north and the Shawsheen marking the southeast edge. Samira cleans on both banks: Downtown and the neighborhoods around Campagnone Common, Tower Hill and Prospect Hill in North Lawrence, Arlington in the north, and South Lawrence, including the Mount Vernon area along the southern edge of the city.
Getting there from Lowell is simple. Interstate 495 runs through the eastern part of the city. Route 28 crosses it from south to north, Route 110 runs east and west through the northern half, and Route 114 starts at the river. The commuter rail stop and Northern Essex Community College keep the city busy all week.
